1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. 9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)–Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, 10 but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. 11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.” 12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. 구제 문제로 공동체 안에 갈등이 생기자 사도들이 중대 결단을 내린다. 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 세워 그 일을 맡기고 자신들은 기도와 말씀 사역에 힘쓰겠다고 한다(3-4절). 공동체 안에 일곱 집사가 세워지자(5절) 하나님의 말씀이 점점 왕성해 제자의 수가 심히 많아지고, 많은 제사장들도 믿음의 도를 따르게 된다(7절). 문제 앞에서 본질이 무엇인지를 찾고, 그 본질을 잡았다. 말씀 전파를 본질의 위치에 자리매김하는 공동체를 하나님은 부흥케 하시고 증인되게 하신다. 그 부흥의 역사와 증인의 권능은 공동체 내의 개인을 통해서도 구체화된다. 집사 스데반은 기사와 표적을 행하며(8절) 복음을 변증한다(10절). 모함을 받아 공회에 붙들려 갈 때조차도 모세를 방불케 하는(출 34:29-35) 얼굴빛으로 모든 이들 앞에 시위한다.
